Problems with new WindowsXP update.

Post by Sirmabus »

Anyone else having problems with the recently released WindowsXP
update from around Dec 04' to Jan 05'?

Killed my Softice, and causes some problems with hooks.
Appears that added some sort of memory protection.

Haven't installed these updates yet. Could you please explain what you mean with "some problems with hooks"? Could you please test the demos which ship with madCodeHook? Do they work? Thanks!

I don't have particular details, other then it was causing crashes.
Hooked apps would randomly crash.

I think it is particularly related to the update that came out on Jan 11, 2005.
The update notes it has a kernel change.

Once I uninstalled this update, the crashes stoped.

Unfortuntaly my SoftIce doesn't work after the uninstall.
Which I am taking up with Compuware/Numega.

I'll let you know what else I find out.
If I did have Softice working with the update, I could catch the GPFs and what not.

Did you have a chance to test out the precompiled madCodeHook demos? When you have problems with madCodeHook that should usually be the first thing to try.

I just checked; my office computer had installed the Jan 11 update on Jan 12, and I've been running madCodeHook fine ever since. I just verified that HookProcessTermination.exe works fine.

BTW, the Jan 11 update did not involve the kernel; it involved the HTML help system! See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securi ... 5-001.mspx

Best regards,

So what do you suspect is the reason for the crashes on your dev PC? Can I relax? Or do you think madCodeHook could be at fault?

It was someone else who experienced problems. I'm all good. :D
